The Pessimists Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from banu g. -- Original voice that conjures Dorothy Parker, Alice Munro, and Harry Matthews : This book is worth buying just for the first chapter in Part Two, where the writer takes on the coarse, depressed, lethargic, and petty American middle class today. And each character in the three couples at the center of this work of wit is perfect: ( Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brett -- An Incisive, Witty Satire of Private School Families : Bethany Ball’s “The Pessimists” is far more intelligent, incisive, and knowing than it needs to be, for such a breezy, entertaining cocktail of an entertainment. Reminiscent in some ways of the Greek chorus of “The Virgin Suicides,” “The Pessimists” slyly captures the foibles, concerns, and insecurities of a collection of wealthy Connecticut parents caught in the thrall of a cultish private school whose headmistress — an enigmatic guru who captures the community in an increasingly sticky web -- is one of the great character portraits of recent memory. The novel is an affecting satire that may also in some ways bring to mind “The Stepford Wives,” as we watch family after family be taken in by the odd school community despite their reservations. The book is filled with comic passages you’ll highlight to savor again later, despite knowing you’re bound to devour the novel as a whole again before too long. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michelle -- Perfect Book Club Pick!!! : I devoured The Pessimists in two nights. I couldn’t wait to get back to it. With humanity, fearlessness, and satire, Bethany Ball captures suburban ennui and secrets. She's also spot on in her rendering of the institutions that create and nourish their members' worst impulses. Perfect book club pick. Readers will have a field day debating these characters’ choices! Highly recommend. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jocelyn Jane -- Dark and funny : Dark and also funny, The Pessimists underscores the power and also the danger of our belief systems. I appreciated this look at the micro- and macro-complications of navigating community, marriage, and parenthood. The tension of this novel builds gradually – it culminates into something that I not only found satisfying, but it made me think about the lives we are all building, one decision at a time, for ourselves and our kids. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from FourthDaughter -- WHAT HAPPENED? : I loved this book until close to the end. It just seemed to decide that was it and ended. Just my humble and imperfect opinion. I did enjoy this book, the characters were very well done, but it lost it at the end. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Bunny S -- No story here... : Most boring book ever. No story...just a rambling word salad. I so regret spending $12.99 for this. A total waste of time..and money. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Job -- Outstanding! : Bethany Ball’s dry and satiric outlook on suburban living gives both a sardonic and compassionate viewpoint of her characters in the potentially apocalyptic future or slow decay of growing older.. A must read. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lucy Z -- Clever, funny, biting, scary and real! : This novel is one that I could not put down. Bethany Ball is a master writer! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
